Projects

The New Light CDC takes pride in the various projects conducted year round for the advancement of the people of Baan Namkem.

Current Projects

Free Meal Program

In partnership with Manna Worldwide, the New Light CDC houses a feeding program for kids from underprivileged families. The kitchen provides nutritious meals for free, five times a week. On certain weekends, the programme also extends to the village through the Mobile Feeding initiative.

After School Care

Integral to the New Light CDC is its After School Care (ASC) programme. These kids come in after school every weekday, and during their 2 hours in the Center, they receive supplementary lessons for English, Science, Math and Arts and Crafts. Specially designed for 4-12 year olds, the ASC is an avenue for the kids to spend their after school hours constructively, learning new skills and honing old ones. The CDC has a mall library of books for the kids, as well as toys and sports equipment.

Full Day School for children of migrant families

The New Light CDC operates a full day school catered to kids of migrant families. There are many migrant families living and working in Nam Kem and nearby villages. While the Thai government allows them to stay, they have very limited access to any government services such as public education. The full day school provides the opportunity for these children to receive an education.

y-POD

The Youth Potential Development program (y-POD), is an initiative spearheaded with the intention of promoting all-rounded development of the Nam Kem teenager. Focusing on areas such as music, education, sports, excursions and leadership development, the New Light CDC caters to these various faculties by offering programs, facilities, and participatory opportunities for every young individual in the village.

Village-Wide Activities

Village-wide celebrations have also been key dates on the New Light CDC’s calendar, with the locals congregating at this part of Nam Kem for a time of feasting, entertainment, and rejuvenation on special occasions, such as, Children’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, etc.

Every Christmas, since 2006, the New Light CDC organizes a big Christmas party for the villagers. The Christmas parties allows for a time of coming together for the villagers. Staff and friends from the New Light CDC also go around the village and government offices, caroling, bringing good cheer to the locals.

Our Needs

Volunteers

If you have a passion for working with children (or teenagers), we want to invite you to spend your vacation, school break or gap year with us in exchange for a memorable and rewarding experience. We also need volunteer groups to partner with us in organizing activities such as English/Sports/Music camps and community events. Please visit our “Volunteer Opportunities” page for more information.

Sponsor a Child’s Education

We have children from migrant families who are in need of sponsors for their education. These children study at the New Light CDC’s full day school. It only costs S$50 (US$40) a month to sponsor a child. The cost covers their books, school supplies, teacher’s salary, transportation, etc. If you are interested in being a sponsor or making a one-time contribution, please contact “The New Light CDC” for more information.
